Video review

Music videos have always been of great interest to me, because they combine two of my favourite arts into one, and I would love to have a job which involves music and visual arts. A video whose concept I find very interesting is the one for the song “Drive” by Incubus (2000). It involves hand drawn animations, inspired by the famous Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher and a more contemporary visual art work - the short animation “Ik Beweeg, Dus Ik Besta - I move, so I am” (1998).

The band’s singer and drummer spent more than 50 hours on creating the frame-by-frame images, which create the effect, that the characters are drawing themselves.

Apart from the great realisation of the idea, what I find really great about the video is that it is a very nice example of how an artist can draw inspiration from two different styles and manage to create a beautiful piece of art. It might be a cliché, but it’s true:

Good artists copy, great artists steal.

And when an artist uses somebody’s idea, develops it and makes it a part of his work, the results could be very pleasing.
